Salve – simple combination of oil and beeswax directed to one thing, to promote healing. Salve is ideal to moisturize rough patches, to soften dry skin, help heal cracks, helps to get rid of chapped lips etc.
Beside all beauty benefits that comes from this natural product made from herbal oils and beeswax, salve also saves us money because it’s relatively cheap and most important is natural, so we are avoiding all harmful chemicals found in today’s modern cosmetic products, plus, salve it’s very easy to make.
There are many different types of salve, different by products (herbs and oil) which they are made of and different by their main benefits. Best ingredient when it comes to salve is calendula. This medicinal flower which is also used in many natural remedies is soothing and anti-inflammatory and when is infused with olive oil it doubles its powers and it’s perfect moisturizer.
In this article we will talk about one amazing salve, made exactly from those 2 ingredients , beeswax and calendula oil plus grapefruit seed oil and chalmolive essential oil. Beeswax combined with these ingredients becomes solid at room temperature. This salve has powerful hydrating powers and high antioxidant properties. Beeswax provides additional protective barrier while grapefruit seed oil is antifungal and antibacterial agent and chalmolive essential oil calms skin. Feel free to add few drops of lavender essential oil to make salve smell better.
Calendula Hand Salve
You will need:
- 2 cups Calendula Flowers (dry)
- 750 ml Virgin Olive Oil
- 100g Beeswax Pastilles
- 1 tbsp Grapefruit Seed Oil
- 1 tsp Lavender Essential Oil
- 1 tsp Chamomile Essential Oils
Step #1 Making Herb Infused Oil
Place dried calendula flowers into 2 mason jars and add the olive oil then seal jars and place them in slow cooker filled with water. Make sure that water covers at least half of the jars and then cover with lid and heat on low for 24 hours.
Step #2 Strain The Herb Infused Oil
When step one is done, remove mason jars and let them cool. When is ready, drain it using cheesecloth (feel free to squeeze the flowers with your hand). Once drained measure 400 ml for our salve recipe and store the rest in glass bottles for next time and keep it in cool, dark place.
Step #3 Making Salve
Melt the beeswax on low heat and the grapefruit seed oil and stir well. Once melted, remove from heat and add both essential oils, lavender and chalmolive and stir. Pour the mixture into tins or small plastic containers. Once completely cool, place the lids and your salve is ready to use.
