Cholesterol in the blood is transferred by means of compounds which are called lipoproteins. Superoxide dismutase abbreviated as LDL (Eng. Low Density Lipoprotein), and cholesterol that carries them, LDL cholesterol, or bad cholesterol.
When LDL cholesterol is elevated LDL tends to stick to the inner surface of blood vessels, thereby narrowing them and reducing their elasticity. This phenomenon is called atherosclerosis. Narrowing of the arteries increases the likelihood for heart attack or stroke. For this reason, the LDL cholesterol is called bad.
This term leads to confusion because it is cholesterol, which is transmitted by means of LDL cholesterol, the same as that carried by HDL (high density lipoprotein, Eng. High Density Lipoprotein). Cholesterol itself is not bad, but the way in which cholesterol is transferred and its quantity causing harmful effects.
In healthy people, about 70% of cholesterol in the blood is carried in LDL.
