Destruction of tooth enamel or tooth decay which is made up mostly of the germs is common problem for both teens and adults. This widespread problem very often is accompanied by pain.
Our mouth is full with hundreds of different types of bacteria who live on our gums and teeth. Some of this bacteria is harmful and is responsible for tooth decay, which later on, if not healed on time, may cause cavity.
Tooth decay occurs as a result of an infection, when certain types of bacteria in our mouth, a bacteria that use sugars from food, makes acids. With time, if not treated, these acids can make a cavity in the tooth.
Tooth decay can be stopped or reversed very easily if treated on time. Enamel that is damaged from the bacteria can repair itself by using minerals from saliva (liquid made by several glands in your mouth area) and from the fluoride in our toothpaste or some other sources, but on other hand, if the tooth decay process continues and healing doesn’t start on time, more minerals will be lost and a cavity will be permanently damaged and then a dentist has to repair it.
There are many things that make you more likely to have tooth decay include such as bad oral care, not seeing a dentist for checkups and cleanings, eating food high in sugar, not having enough saliva in mouth, having diabetes, smoking etc. On other hand, there are many things that will prevent tooth decay, such as regular brushing, consumption of nutritious and balanced meals, limit snacks and sweets, visit your dentist regularly etc.
