So far you’ve probably noticed the large red spots on back of Olympic athletes wondering what they are. Answer is that they come due a specific therapy, for which athletes says it helps them to reduce pain and works on improvement of muscle.
Word is for ventosa massage, known as ‘cupping therapy‘. This treatment with cups is known thousands of years ago in Egypt and in ancient Greece also, used by Hippocrates (c. 400 BC), who used cupping for internal disease and structural problems. Also this therapy was known in ancient Indian medicine and in China. In that time, as tools for this technique, animal horns, various cups made of bamboo or metal were used.
At various points of the body (mostly back), small plastic vessels are placed from which air is displaced and vacuum is created and the cups are usually left in place for 15 to 20 minutes. In this way, the skin and subcutaneous structures cause the accumulation of blood in the place without air. Once the cups are removed, red circles appear on those spots, which gives you the answer, if you was wondering why athletes have those huge circle marks on their back.
Although this is still considered as part of alternative medicine, today, cupping treatment increasingly finds its place in modern western medicine and in the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases, rheumatism, but also in sport medicine for treatment of tired muscles after intense training and competitions.
This treatment, as we said, causes a vacuum effect on the skin surface and subcutaneous layers (tight fascia and muscles). This is known as the inverse massage that causes a pleasant feeling of relaxation and relieve muscle tension. This negative pressure loosen muscles and causes increased blood flow, sedative effect on the nervous system and is very useful for stiff muscles, it relieve pain in the neck and shoulders, also is good against migraine, anxiety and general fatigue of the body. After treatment is recommended to drink more water to expel the toxins that are released during the treatment.
