Does back pain requires mandatory rest? What if you wake up during the night? Does massages and creams help?
There is almost no adult who has not had at least one episode of back pain. It can be caused by degeneration of intervertebral discs, disc herniation, spinal stenosis, a strained muscle (myofascial syndrome) and many other illnesses and injuries. Back pain can be acute, lasting up to a month, or chronic, lasting more than a month.
However, in as much as 85% of cases, one can not determine a clear cause of the pain, even the application of sophisticated diagnostic procedures, such as a scanner or MRI.
In most cases, the pain resolve spontaneously without any treatment. Less commonly, the pain becomes chronic, when you require additional inspections and professional help. Specifically, patients with chronic back pain face significantly reduced quality of life.
Most doctors agree, namely, to rest for more than 48 hours does not make sense, and that may even be counterproductive. Inactivity can cause depression, increase the likelihood of blood clotting in the veins of the legs, muscles weaken. Therefore, after the onset of back pain should be activated as soon as possible. Patients often avoid movement and any activity, fearing further complications. This fear is absolutely unfounded – the usual physical activity can only result in a higher or lower pain, but no additional injuries (complications).
Cooling, heating, massage, creams etc.
Application of appropriate local measures may also be of some help. Recommended are cooling, heating, massage, rubbing cream on the the painful region.
Honestly, there is no concrete medical evidence of whether and how these measures work, but it is a simple and harmless procedure, which should certainly be given a chance.
